Osphos® Injectable 60mg/mL helps treat the symptoms of navicular syndrome in horses. Osphos® for horses is an injectable bisphosphonate solution that inhibits bone resorption by binding to calcium phosphate crystals (inhibiting their formation and dissolution), and by exerting direct cellular effects on osteoclasts. One vial of the Osphos® injection is sufficient for most treatments. Significant improvement in 74.7% of horses fifty-six days after treatment. For use in horses four years of age and older.
Active Ingredients: Osphos® is supplied in cartons with each carton containing one clear glass 20 mL vial with 15 mL (900 mg) clodronate disodium (60 mg/mL) per vial.

Storage: Store at controlled room temperature 25°C (77°F) with excursions between 15°C-30°C (59°F-86°F) permitted. Single use vial; discard unused portion.
Side Effects: In field studies and post‐approval experience the most common side effects reported were signs of discomfort, nervousness, and colic. Other signs reported were: renal failure, polyuria, polydipsia, anorexia, lethargy, hypercalcemia, behavioral disorder, hyperkalemia, hyperactivity, recumbency, hyperthermia, injection site reactions, muscle tremor, urticaria, hyperglycemia, and fracture. In some cases, death has been reported as an outcome of these adverse events.

Warnings: For intramuscular use in horses only.
Horses with hypersensitivity to clodronate disodium should not receive Osphos®.
Do not use in horses with impaired renal function or with a history of renal disease.
Do not use in horses intended for human consumption.
NSAIDs should not be used concurrently with Osphos®. Concurrent use of NSAIDs with Osphos® may increase the risk of renal toxicity and acute renal failure.
The safe use of Osphos® has not been evaluated in horses less than 4 years of age or breeding horses. Bisphosphonates should not be used in pregnant or lactating mares, or mares intended for breeding.

Owners should be advised to:
  • NOT administer NSAIDs.
  • Ensure horses have access to adequate water before and after administration of Osphos®.
  • Observe their horse for at least 2 hours post-treatment for signs of colic, agitation, and/or abnormal behavior.
  • If a horse appears uncomfortable, nervous, or experiences cramping post-treatment, hand walk the horse for 15 minutes. If signs do not resolve, contact the veterinarian.
  • Monitor water intake and urine output for 3-5 days post-treatment.
  • Contact their veterinarian if the horse displays abnormal clinical signs such as changes in drinking and urination, appetite, and attitude.

Overdoses can be very dangerous. Keep out of reach of children and animals.

Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian.

If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.

This medication should only be given to the pet for whom it was prescribed.

Disposal of Unused Prescription Medications

  1. Return unwanted or unused medications to Revival Animal Health in person, or visit www.disposemymeds.org to find a pharmacy near you.
  2. A secondary method of drug disposal is to remove the unwanted medication from any wrappers or containers and place it in a plastic bag with moist coffee grounds or cat litter. This can be disposed of in the regular garbage collection.
  3. Please do NOT dispose of unwanted meds down the drain or toilet, as this may eventually find its way into the human water supply.

Learn more about disposal of unused prescription medications here.

Disposal of Medical Sharps

  1. When you're finished with the syringe and needle, do not try to recap, remove, bend or break the needle. This is where most injuries occur.
  2. Dispose the syringe and needle immediately in a nearby sharps container. All sharps must be deposited in a puncture-proof container. Make sure your storage location is child and animal proof.
  3. As with all product handling, make sure you wash your hands after handling medical sharps.

Disposal of Sharps Container

  1. When your sharps container is half-full, sift dry Portland Cement throughout the sharps. Fill the container with water, and rotate until the cement is mixed and the sharps have been distributed throughout the cement mixture. Let cement dry for 24 hours.
  2. Seal the lid of the container tightly and use duct tape to seal. Label the container "Livestock Sharps" to properly identify the contents.
  3. Dispose of the containers in accordance with your state's regulations.

Our pharmacy hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. − 4:30 p.m. CST.
