- What is in Vetericyn Wound Care?
- Vetericyn Wound and Skin Care is a proprietary formulation of oxy-chlorine compounds based upon the Microcyn Technology platform. Vetericyn Wound and Skin Care are intended for the management of skin abrasions, lacerations, minor irritations, cuts and intact skin. Its pH is in the physiologically acceptable range and is also shelf-stable.
- What is in Vetericyn products?
- A proprietary formulation of oxychlorine compounds based upon patented technology. Vetericyn's base ingredient, oxychlorine, is similar to that produced by healthy cells in the body.
- What are the ingredients in Vetericyn OTC liquid?
- Active: Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) (0.003%). Inactive: Electrolyzed Water (H2O) (99.97%), Sodium Chloride (NaCl) (0.023%), Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) (0.004%). Vetericyn has different formulations with different ingredients and concentrations. Please review our product highlights.
- What is the difference between Vetericyn available in stores and Vetericyn VF, the "vet strength" formula?
- Vetericyn VF formulation is almost double in strength and potency from the regular Vetericyn that is found in stores. The Vetericyn VF formulations are only sold to licensed veterinarians and can only be obtained from such.
- How does Vetericyn work?
- Vetericyn works by mechanically cleaning and debriding the affected area of application.
- What makes Vetericyn unique from other animal would cleansers/dressings?
- Vetericyn is unique from other animal wound cleansers/dressings because it has a safety profile comparable to saline; is safe for use on all animal species regardless of age and condition; is non-toxic, non-irritating, non-staining, and safe to use on or around the eyes, nose and mouth; does not contain steroids or antibiotics; can be easily applied with no mixing or dilution required; does not require rinsing after use; is within an appropriate physiological pH range; and is shelf-stable.
- Is Vetericyn just "diluted bleach"?
- No. Vetericyn is very different than bleach. Vetericyn's mode of action works through hypochlorous acid and not sodium hypochlorite (or bleach). To name a few differences unlike bleach, Vetericyn does not emit toxic vapors, is non-corrosive and is non-irritating. Vetericyn is manufactured and stays within an appropriate physiological pH range throughout its entire shelf life while bleach and Dakin's solution have a high pH. Vetericyn is non-toxic and biodegradable. Vetericyn is safe for use on all animal species regardless of age or condition and bleach is not. The use of Vetericyn does not normally require the use of personal protective equipment. Vetericyn does not require rinsing after applications such as bleach products may. Unlike bleach, Vetericyn will not stain clothing or furniture with application to animal. Vetericyn is also shelf-stable up to 24 months depending on the Vetericyn product. Bleach and Dakin's solution is normally made for immediate use.
- Why is it important that Vetericyn contains no antibiotics?
- The fact that Vetericyn does not contain antibiotics is significant due to the concern that overuse of antibiotics promotes resistance. The repeated and extended use of Vetericyn in cleaning and debriding the wound bed has no adverse consequences.
- What other benefits are there in using Vetericyn?
- Vetericyn is manufactured and stays within an appropriate physiological pH range throughout its entire shelf life and does not sting when applied. Vetericyn is non-corrosive, non-toxic and biodegradable. Vetericyn is shelf-stable.
- Is it okay if wounds almost immediately turn red when using Vetericyn? Is this desired?
- Yes. This is a normal observation as a result of using Vetericyn for cleansing and debriding the affected area.
- How is Vetericyn made?
- Vetericyn is made via a unique electrolysis manufacturing process in which purified water containing trace amounts of sodium chloride (NaCl) is oxidized creating a proprietary solution of oxidized water (water is broken down into oxygen and other oxidized species) and oxy-chlorine species (hypochlorous acid and sodium hypochlorite).
- Has Vetericyn's efficacy and safety been proven in clinical studies?
- Vetericyn is marketed based on a US FDA approved wound care medical device technology for human use, and there are no current regulatory requirements by the FDA for animal device clearance. It is legal and viable to use current Vetericyn consumer product and Vetericyn VF for the use of animal care. To demonstrate its safety and effectiveness, there were two major animal clinical studies and 25 human clinical studies have been conducted to date.
- Recent animal studies include:
- Large Animal Respiratory Infections: In the first study, we tested our technology against Moraxella catarrhalis, a gram-negative, aerobic, oxidase-positive diplococcus, which causes respiratory tract-associated infection in both animals and humans. Our technology killed M. catarrhalis to the limit (99.98888889%) at each test data point = 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, 120 seconds, five minutes and 15 minutes.
- Cattle Pink Eye: In a second study performed at Texas A&M, our technology was tested successfully against Moraxella bovis, the cause of Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis, or cattle pinkeye. The disease is relatively common (though infecting cattle only) and is transmitted by flies. Vetericyn killed to the limit in five-minute and 10-minute test intervals. Results are forthcoming. The existing two common medical treatments for cattle pink eye are challenging and expensive:
- Subconjunctival injection of a Tetracycline, or
- A topical application of Cloxacillin.
- Recent animal studies include:
- As well, our technology has been the proven effective in reducing/curing infection and/or speeding the healing process in 25 clinical studies (many of them peer-reviewed) conducted on over 800 human patients worldwide.
