Artificial insemination straw guns are constructed of stainless steel in a variety of configurations. The basic gun design consists of a stainless steel barrel with flange at the top for the plunger finger grip plus a stainless steel inner rod, or plunger, with a flange at the top for plunging with the operator's thumb. Designed to work with 1/2cc or 1/4cc straws.

The O-ring style gun, the extreme top outer section of the barrel flares out. A slit sheath is used with this gun. The slit allows the sheath to extend over this flared area and a plastic O-ring is then wedged up against the flared area holding the sheath in place.
