All Dog Dewormers

Most puppies are born with roundworms passed from their mother, so breeders deworm early and often. Pick a dewormer by the worms you need to treat:

  • Roundworms and hookworms in young puppies: pyrantel pamoate liquids such as Nemex-2, Liquid Wormer 2X and Sentry WormX DS. These are the puppy wormers breeders use from the first weeks of life.
  • Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and Taenia tapeworms: fenbendazole granules, Panacur C and Safe-Guard Canine, given 3 days in a row.
  • Tapeworms: praziquantel, in Tapeworm Dewormer and in combination products.
  • Broad spectrum in one dose: combinations such as Worm X Plus, Virbantel chewables, Triple Wormer and Quad Dewormer.

When to deworm. Treat puppies and their mother together at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks, then move puppies to a monthly preventive. The Puppy Vaccine and Deworming Planner lays out the dates for your litter, and Dr. Greer covers the mother in Deworming Pregnant Dogs. Check fecal samples with your veterinarian to confirm what you are treating.

Coccidia and giardia are protozoa, not worms, and standard dewormers do not treat them; see Coccidia in Puppies. For a full schedule, read the Kitten and Puppy Deworming Schedule.
